  1. Count out 13 cards as the reserve, top card face up.

  3. Four cards face up as the tableau.
  4. The remaining 34 cards form the stock.

5. Play in detail

  1. Foundations: Each starts with a card of the base card’s rank and builds up in the same suit (across King–Ace).
  2. Tableau: down, alternating red/black, also in a circle (a King may go on an Ace).
  3. Sequences: Whole ordered sequences may be moved.
  4. Empty spaces are filled at once with the top reserve card. Once the reserve is empty, any card may go there.
  5. Stock: Three cards at a time onto the waste; the top one is playable. The stock may be gone through any number of times.

Example. The base card is the 8 of hearts. As soon as another 8 is free, it starts a new foundation. On the 8 of hearts follow the 9, 10 … King, Ace, up to the 7 of hearts.

Origin & history

The name goes back to Richard A. Canfield, who ran a casino in Saratoga Springs at the end of the 19th century. There, players supposedly bought a deck for 52 dollars and got 5 dollars back for each card placed on a foundation. In Britain the same patience is called “Demon”.
