What is it about? Brag is the traditional British poker game and older than poker itself. Everyone gets just three cards. Players bet in turn, raise or fold. Whoever doesn't look at their cards plays “blind” and bets only half as much – an advantage that takes nerve.

2. Cards and material

HandExample
Prial (three of a kind)3-3-3 is highest, then A-A-A, K-K-K …
Running flush5-6-7 of hearts
Run8-9-10 mixed
Flushthree spades
Pairtwo queens
High cardnone of the above

3. Preparation and start

  1. Ante: Everyone pays a small stake into the pot.
  2. Deal: Everyone gets 3 cards face down.
  3. Blind or seen: Everyone decides whether to look at their cards. A player who doesn't is “blind”.
  4. Start: The player left of the dealer starts the betting.

Start example: Everyone pays 5 chips. You look at your cards: 7-7-king – a pair.

4. Goal and winning

5. Play in detail

Betting.

  1. In turn: call (pay at least the current stake), raise or fold (throw in your cards, losing your bets).
  2. Blind players pay only half the stake of a seen player.
  3. A blind player may look at their cards at any time – from then on they pay in full.
  4. There's no limit to how many times betting goes round.

Show.

Example with Players 1 to 4. Ante 5. Order: Player 2, 3, 4, 1.

  1. Player 2 plays blind and bets 5. Player 3 looks at his cards and folds.
  2. Player 4 looks at his cards and bets 10 (twice Player 2's blind stake).
  3. Player 1 has a pair of sevens and also bets 10.
  4. Player 2 now looks at his cards: queen high – he folds.
  5. Player 4 bets 20, Player 1 calls for the show and pays 40. Player 4 shows 4-6-9 of spades: a flush. A flush beats a pair – Player 4 wins the pot.

9. Tips for beginners

  1. Know the hands: The run beats the flush – unlike poker.
  2. Use blind play: It's cheap and unsettles the others.
  3. Don't play every hand: With just one high card, fold.
  4. Pairs are good: With many players a pair is already a decent hand.
  5. Show with purpose: Call for a show when you think you're ahead – it costs double.
  6. Manage chips: Never bet everything with a mediocre hand.
  7. Watch others: A player betting high early often really has good cards.

10. Summary in 10 steps

  1. 52 cards, everyone pays the ante.
  2. 3 cards face down each.
  3. Play blind (half stake) or look at your cards.
  4. In turn: call, raise or fold.
  5. Seen players pay twice the blind stake.
  6. Two left: show for double the stake.
  7. Prial > running flush > run > flush > pair > high card.
  8. 3-3-3 is the best prial.
  9. Best hand at the show or last player wins the pot.
  10. At the end, count the chips.

11. Frequently asked questions

What is the best prial?

Three threes (3-3-3), then three aces.

Is the run higher than the flush?

Yes. In Brag it's the reverse of poker: three cards in sequence are rarer than three of a suit.

Why play blind?

It costs only half, and the others don't know how strong you are.

When may I call for a show?

Only when exactly two players remain.

Is Brag allowed without money?

Yes, with play chips it's an ordinary card game. On cardgames.zone there is never any real money involved.

How long does a hand take?

One to three minutes.

Origin & history

Brag descends from the older game Primero and is documented in England since the 18th century; it is considered the British forerunner of poker. Teen Patti in India is a close relative.
