What is it about? Tong-its is the most popular card game in the Philippines. Three players meld sets and runs and lay off on any meld on the table. Whoever gets rid of all their cards shouts "Tong-its!". The "draw" call adds excitement: a player who believes they hold the lowest hand challenges the others.
2. Cards and material
- Pack: 52 French cards.
- Card values: Ace 1, 2–10 by value, jack, queen, king 10 each.
- Ace: always low (A-2-3, not Q-K-A).
- Set: three or four cards of the same rank.
- Run: three or more consecutive cards of the same suit.
- Face up and face down: Hands concealed, discards and melds face up.
3. Preparation and start
- Dealing: The dealer gets 13 cards, the others 12.
- Start: The dealer begins – without drawing, they meld and then discard.
Start example: You are the dealer and hold three sevens. You meld them and discard a king.
4. Goal and winning
- Tong-its: Whoever has combined and melded all their cards wins at once.
- Draw: Whoever wins the challenge wins the round.
- Stock empty: The player with the fewest points left wins.
- Game: After the agreed number of rounds, the player with the most chips wins.
5. Play in detail
A turn.
- Draw: from the stock – or the top discard if it immediately completes a combination.
- Meld: put sets and runs face up on the table.
- Lay off (sapaw): add cards to your own or other players' melds.
- Discard: one card onto the discard pile.
Draw.
- A player who has melded at least one combination may call "draw" at the start of their turn.
- The others fold or challenge.
- Everyone counts the points left in hand – the lowest hand wins.
Example with Players 1 to 3.
- After a few turns Player 1 has melded three sevens and spades 8-9-10 and laid off on Player 3's run. Left in his hand: ace, 2 and 4.
- Player 2 discards the 5 of hearts. It doesn't help Player 1 – he draws from the stock and discards the card drawn.
- On his next turn Player 1 calls "draw". His points left: 1 + 2 + 4 = 7.
- Player 2 challenges with 12, Player 3 folds: Player 1 wins the round.
6. Scoring
| Case | Score |
|---|---|
| Win by draw or empty stock | each loser pays 1 unit |
| Tong-its | each loser pays 3 units |
| Loser without a meld ("burned") | pays double |
- Bonuses (house rules): for aces, concealed fours and the like.
- Jackpot (variant): Whoever wins twice in a row takes the jackpot.
- Recording: Chips or points per player.
7. Special rules and situations
- Discard only if used at once: You may only take it if it immediately forms a combination.
- Burned: A player who hasn't melded anything by the end can't win.
- Draw blocked: If someone has laid off on your meld (sapaw), you may not call "draw" on your next turn.
- Common mistakes: waiting too long with high cards; calling "draw" with too many points left.
